Seed Starting

The seeds are started!  Spring is coming!!!  Members of the garden leadership team planted seeds today in the greenhouses at the Farm at Red Hill.  HUGE thank you to the Harrisons for generously letting us use some space for a second year.  The seeds started today will be ready to transplant into the garden in several weeks.  Starting seeds in a greenhouse and transplanting is a good way to improve germination rates and get an earlier start than direct seeding everything in the garden.

Seeds planted today:

  • Buttercrunch Lettuce
  • Italian Flat Leaf Parsley
  • Forest Green Parsley
  • Genovese Basil
  • Brandywine Tomatoes
  • Green Zebra Tomatoes
  • Sugar Cherry Tomatoes
  • Sun Gold Tomatoes (with seeds saved from the UVa Community Garden last year)
  • Arkansas Traveler Tomatoes
  • Striped Roman Tomatoes
  • Jalapeno Peppers
  • California Wonder Bell Peppers

We will share pictures as the seeds begin to sprout and grow.  We also plan to seed a few more varieties of peppers, tomatoes (maybe), and other summer crops in mid-March at the garden and grow them in sunny windowsills.  It will also soon be time to direct seed leaf lettuce, beets, carrots, potatoes, asparagus, and onions in the garden – look for a notice about a date after spring break depending on the weather…..
